G'day! I am growing a moustache this year for Movember. I have decided to put down my shaver for one month (November) and help raise awareness and funds for men's health - specifically prostate cancer and depression. What many people don't appreciate is that close to 3,000 men die of prostate cancer each year in Australia and one in eight men will experience depression in their lifetime - many of whom don't seek help. Facts like these have convinced me I should get involved and I am hoping that you will support me. To sponsor my Mo, you can either: * Click this link http://au.movember.com/mospace/23303/ and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account * Write a cheque payable to 'Movember Foundation', referencing my Registration Number 23303 and mailing it to: Movember Foundation, PO Box 292, Prahran, VIC, 3181 Remember, all donations over $2 are tax deductible (in Australia - you may want to check local tax laws for other countries). Movember is now in its sixth year and, to date, has achieved some pretty amazing results by working alongside The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCFA) and beyondblue: the national depression initiative. Check out further details at: http://au.movemberfoundation.com/research-and-programs. If you are interested in following the progress of my Mo, click here http://au.movember.com/mospace/23303/. My divorce is now finalised and I am legally single again. This last year and a bit has been the hardest and most painful time of my life but at least now it's all over and done with and I can get on with getting on with life. But just for tonight I'm going to eat cheese till I puke and then cry myself to sleep. I figure I owe myself that much. Current Mood: exhausted | | Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 | | 7:15 pm |

Mobile Phone Rant
Why doesn't anyone make a really good mobile phone/computing device? It would appear that nobody has yet managed to come up with anything better than the iPhone which is a fun mobile computing doohickey, but from what I hear it's not a particularly good phone - mostly due to poor battery life and dodgy reception. I also hate the idea of being tied to iTunes and only being able to run apps that Apple approve of. The new Nokia 97 has great specs but all the reviews say the software lets it down. My current phone (Sony Ericsson w960i) is a good MP3 player but is very slow when opening up text messages. When will someone come out with something that is as fun as the iPhone, has a great QWERTY keyboard and standard headphone socket like the N97, plays music as well as the Sony Ericsson line and is snappy and responsive in all areas? Android, I'm looking at you. Current Mood: annoyed | | Thursday, July 9th, 2009 | | 9:19 pm |
Torchwood
Ooooh...I'm bouncing with excitement having just watched the first episode of the new Torchwood series. This is some DAMN fine British science fiction TV going on here with some genuinely freak me out moments involving a fun way for aliens to send a message to the people of earth. And without being spoilerific let me just say the final word in the show shot shivers up and down my spine! Current Mood: excited | | Sunday, July 5th, 2009 | | 9:37 am |
Withdrawal is not fun!
I can now appreciate how people hooked on hard drugs have a hard time getting off them. I've been going through withdrawal from my anti-depressants for the last week and it's a constant struggle to not simply go back on them in order to get rid of the symptoms. I went on these meds shortly after my wife left me on the advice of my GP. No, hang on, my GP didn't advise my wife to leave me, he advised me to try these meds to help me get through it. He also told me when I was feeling ready I could just stop taking them with no side effects. Lying bastard. Current Mood: distressed | | Friday, June 26th, 2009 | | 7:19 am |
Looming
There is an event looming on the horizon and lurching steadily towards me. It's something I have so far been successfully avoiding thinking about, but it's so close now that I can't avoid random thoughts slapping me in the brain. Next month I have to finalise my divorce. This is a good thing as it will provide a certain amount of closure and leave me space to fully move on. But it's still a divorce. And I still feel like I just want to hide from the whole thing. Caprica
I was a huge fan of the new Battlestar Galactica and while I don't feel there is now a hole in my life due to the series ending my weekly TV downloads are somewhat lighter than I would like. Caprica is a spin off prequel set 58 years prior to the events in BSG. It was billed as a "family drama set on another planet" which did not interest me in the slightest, but when I saw the pilot episode available for download I thought "what the hell, I'll watch ten minutes and see what it's like." 90 minutes later as the end credits rolled I was well and truly hooked. Caprica asks questions about what it is to be truly alive and human, it provides a fascinating insight into a how technology may affect our society over the next century and it is at least as dark, gritty and real as BSG was at its best. Caprica did suffer from the strange problem that only affects computers on TV and in the movies where computer data can never be copied or backed up but only moved from one place to another, but that is a very minor complaint about an awesome hour and a half of TV. If you're any sort of BSG fan at all I recommend you hit your favourite torrent site and grab this. Current Mood: impressed | | Sunday, April 12th, 2009 | | 8:48 am |
Why I Now Love Twitter
I have to admit I've considered Twitter to an even more utterly pointless waste of time than most things on the internet every since I first heard about it. But recently I've figured out what it is useful for. A couple of weeks ago there was an earthquake in Melbourne. Only a very small one with no damage reported anywhere, but the whole office building I was in shook for a couple of seconds. Everyone got up and started asking "Was that an earthquake?" with responses ranging from "It was probably a big truck going past" to "I blame those helicopters flying overhead" to "Was what an earthquake?". I immediately jumped on to Twitter and searched on Melbourne - within seconds of the event there were dozens and then hundreds of Tweets from people all over town talking about the earthquake. So Twitter is awesome at finding out about something big that's just happened, providing confirmation and details long before any of the news sites have anything. The other reason I now love Twitter is that I got up this morning, looked at my Vista Twitter widget and saw that Doctor Who is currently trending. This then prompted me to discover that there was a new episode broadcast last night which I can now download. Hooray! Current Mood: cheerful | | Saturday, April 4th, 2009 | | 7:24 am |
Last weekend I took my Great Dane puppy Chewy (current weight: 45kgs) to a pet expo where she won first prize in the best looking dog category. I was a very proud dad! This weekend I start my new fitness class - and Chewy gets to join in as well as it's being run by a fitness instructor who works at the Doggy Day Care place Chewy attends. I'm sure Chewy will have lots of fun but I'm not enjoying the fact that I have to get up on a Saturday morning before it's even light! Current Mood: lethargic |
